Volume 8 (Archis 2006 #2): Ubiquitous China

I’d never seen this magazine before, but I picked this issue up because it is about the relationship of architecture to contemporary Chinese society. The articles, mostly by Chinese authors cover a wide variety of topics: city planning, building conditions, preservation, Chinatowns in the Chinese diaspora are a few of the topics. Along with the articles, there are many photographs, interspersed with charts of information about contemporary Chinese society.

Non-Chinese authors include Rem Koolhaas (who writes about the public sphere of China), and Linda Vlassenrood, from the Netherlands Architecture institute, who was involved in the Contemporary China: Architecture exhibition.

Volume describes itself as an “independent bimonthly for architecture to go beyond itself”. It is a project by ARCHIS + AMO + C-LAB + NAi

Other issues of Volume are available from NAi Booksellers It’s kind of expensive (~$20 an issue in the US) - hopefully I can find these in a library nearby.
