Buenos Aires Zero Degree: The Making of Happy Together
I watched Buenos Aires Zero Degree: The Making of Happy Together today. It’s a 59-minute documentary about the making of Wong Kar-Wai’s film Happy Together. While the making-of-the-movie aspect is interesting, looking at all the footage that wasn’t used in the final film is the best part. There are some really compelling images in this film.
The cinematography was by Christopher Doyle, and it’s very good. The amount of fantastic footage they must have had, and not used in the final film, seems huge.
If you’re interested in Wong Kar-Wai and / or Christopher Doyle, this is recommended. I saw it on a DVD containing just this movie (which is now out of print), but it’s included as an extra in the newest Kino release of Happy Together, and on the Artificial Eye release of the movie as well.
Unfortunately, the quality of the image on both the Kino and Artificial Eye releases of Happy Together (from what I’ve heard) isn’t as good as it could be. That’s too bad, because there is some really great photography in this film.
